New for 2012 is a distinctly different hearing aid processor, the Neuro-Compensator by Vitasound. This hearing aid is the first to use a unique neural based approach to hearing improvement which sets it apart from all other hearing aids on the market. The Neuro-Compensator corrects hearing loss by initially using computer modeling of the inner ear to determine the optimal amplification. Then, a complex machine learning algorithm refines the auditory model to simulate the response of the auditory nerve across all frequency channels. This approach differs from all other hearing aid circuits which address hearing loss at the inner ear but do not take into account the nature of the signal as it is transmitted to the auditory nerve.

The advantage of the Neuro-Compensator approach is a significant improvement in the clarity of the amplified signal which is critical for hearing in all situations. Research is ongoing and has already suggested that the cleaner signal of the Neuro-Compensator improves the sound quality of speech and music, results in better directionality of sound, and may more effectively reduce some forms of tinnitus.

The Vitasound Neuro-Compensator is based on over ten years of research at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada and has been available in Canadian markets since 2010. Although engineered in Canada, the hearing aids are manufactured in the United States. It is available in all models of hearing aids including open fit, standard BTE, and custom.
